FV-622 Alvis Stalwart Mk 2

Truck Cargo HMLC FFR W/Winch 6x6 5 Ton
The Stalwart was a private venture by Alvis that was adopted and entered service with the British Army in 1966 as a general transport truck in preference to the FV431, the load carrier variant of the FV430 series. It was one of the same line of vehicles that included the Alvis Saracen, Saladin and Salamander. The high mobility and amphibious capabilities were considered ideal for resupplying units in the field. First introduced as the Fv-620 Mk1 this was replaced in service by the Mk2 (FV-622) with redesigned cab glazing for better vision and a central oil system feeding to all 6 hubs amongst other design improvements. The hull is the vehicle chassis, the engine is situated under the load deck in the rear of the hull and the gearboxes, differentials and transfer boxes forward of this. The load deck was open-topped with large drop down panels on either side. Waterproof seals ensured that these would not leak when in the water. The three man cab has the driver's position in the centre and a seat for a passenger either side. The cab can only be entered through roof hatches. The Stalwart could carry 5 tons of stores on-board and tow another 5 tons or simply tow 10 tons. Alternatively 38 fully equipped troops could be carried by the GS versions (FV-620 and FV-622) or the Gloster-Saro Bulk Refuelling Pack. In the water it was driven by a combination of it's road wheels and vectored thrust water-jet propulsion units at about 6 knots top speed (4 knots on water jets alone, 2 knots on road wheels alone).
Alternative variants on the Mk 2 were the FV-623 Artillery Limber and FV-624 REME - both fitted with Atlas 3001/66 cranes
